Ultrasound thermal test object casing. Expanded view of the casing used in a device known as a thermal test object (TTO). This is used for testing temperature rises caused by ultrasound beams. It is a closed container with an acoustically transparent window and a thermal sensor (such as a thermocouple) between pieces of tissue-mimicking material (TMM). This apparatus is used to test medical ultrasound devices, and also to assess treatments that use ultrasound. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK.
