In the tale of William of Palermo, Queen Braunde turns her stepson Alphouns into a werewolf - here helping William and Melior.

This scene is from the medieval romance tale of William of Palermo who was carried away as a child by a werewolf, who was really prince Alphouns, heir to the Spanish throne. His stepmother had turned him into a werewolf. He watches over William, whose uncle had usurped his (William's) father throne. William falls in love with Melior, the emperor's daughter, and escapes her father and planned marriage with the help of the werewolf, seen here bringing food and supplies to the two in a cave. The two had dressed in bearskins to avoid detection when fleeing. In the end, the werewolf is able to assume his princely form.
