Magnetic ore separator. This apparatus comprises an electromagnet that is being used to magnetise the iron in iron ores and separate them from non-magnetic ores. An electromagnet uses electricity and coiled wires (a solenoid) to create strong magnetic fields. The electromagnet is from the German company Siemens, and the location of this facility is in Mercadal, Santander, Spain. The electromagnet was first invented in 1824. Artwork from the seventh volume (first period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
