Northward over the great ice : a narrative of life and work along the shores and upon the interior ice-cap of northern Greenland in the years 1886 and 1891-1897, with a description of the little tribe of Smith Sound Eskimos, the most northerly human beings in the world, and an account of the discovery and bringing home of the Saviksue or great Cape York meteorites . he temperature was comparatively mild (—3^°F.),and both were clad in complete reindeer suits. The proper way was to return to the house with allpossible speed, and come back with the three natives,Verhoeff, sledges, lines, sleeping-bags, lights, andeverything necessary to get the boys down with-out delay as soon as we reached them. I need notsay that I led the return to the house at a half-run,and long before reaching it, had decided what everyman should do, so that we could start back in less thanten minutes. I pushed open the door with the firstorder on my lips, but the spectacle before me left itunuttered. There sat the two boys at the table eati-ng their sup-per with excellent appe-tites. The clock over thetable recorded 11145 one who has not beenthrough a similar experi-ence can understand myfeeling of relief. The story of the boyswas soontold. Theyhad hadmuch trou-ble in get-ting up theslope, andit was al-ready get-ting darkwhen the old couple SHOEING A SLEDGE WITH ICE. Preparing for the Ice-Cap Campaign 225 passed the cape, the boys being less than half-way tothe summit. The ascent was so steep, however, thatto return was impossible, and so, laboriously cuttingsteps with the heels of the Doctors snow-shoes, theonly implement they had, they climbed slowly up,hanging on by tooth and nail, and finally reached theplateau at the top. Jack, who had followed them, hadgone part way up the cliff and then could not go far-ther. Travelling along the plateau to Mile Valley, they descended there, and returned to the house overthe bay ice. This incident perhaps seems trivial. Possibly with-out my being
