A practical treatise on the technics and principles of dental orthopedia and prosthetic correction of cleft palate . is important that every orthodontist should give to it a carefulconsideration and study. The temporo-maxillary articulation in the normal state, is the only one in thebody which permits a considerable normal movement in relation to its functionalseating in the sockets. When the mandible is forced directly forward in normalmovements, both condyles glide evenly forward upon their inter-articular fibrocartilages, until they rest against the posterior inclined planes of the articulareminences, where they are prevented from passing over the crests by the strongtension of the capsular and other ligaments. When the normal movement is onlyin a lateral or sidewise direction, one condyle alone moves forward, while the otherremains in its socket. In this second form of lateral malocclusion, both condyles remain in theirmost posterior positions in the glenoid cavities, while the front of the mandible—shown by the chin and the lower front teeth—is far to one side of its normal medio- FiG. occlusal relations, showing that the body of the mandible is bent to one 146 shows a few characteristic positions of the front teeth made from occlusalimpressions of three cases in practice having this peculiar malocclusion. Thecondition may be caused by intra-uterine or accouchement forces, or more probablyfrom the thoughtless habit of some mothers in causing the young babe to nurseand lie far more often upon one side than the other. From the latter cause, themandible is forced to remain in a strained lateral malposition for repeated periodsof time during the very early years of its yielding immaturity when very slightcontinued pressure will result—if not corrected—in a permanent malformationof the bones. It seems probable that this is the main if not the only cause, in that it so exactlycorresponds to the condition which would inevitably arise under thes
