Through eons of time, the shale rock of these Cape Sandstone mountains has weathered away ,leaving these rock pinnacles and, more often, the flat-topped mountains that are so typical of the Karoo landscape. This outcrop is part of the Koedoesberg Mountain in the Tankwa Karoo.
