Socially, he is a manof sterling qualities and possesses a genial, social nature. He is anhonored member of the W., in which order he has been officiallyhonored. Politically, he has always been an enthusiastic democrat,whose ancestors loyally supported the same principles so ably advoca-ted by him. Mr. Johnson, however, has never expressed a desire forofficial recognition as a reward for his faithful service to his party. 50 PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ^W JOHN E. DISMUKES, the sub-ject of this sketch was ))orn inCxarrard county, Ky., July 8,1843. Mr. Dismukes was partly ed-ucated in the city of Lexington, ofthat state. In 1868, at the age of 25years, he came to Missouri, locatingin Howard county, where he occu-pied his time in farming, and teach-ing in the public schools during thewinter season for seven years. Inthe fall of 18T() our subject came toSalisbury, and engaged in the print-ing l)usiness, and has folknved it ever* since. His tirst position in this city was on the Salisbury Press, in its infancy, where he remained till1883, when he purchased a half interest in the publication, which wasrun under the tirm name of Disnuikes & Gallemore. Four years laterhe sold his interest to his partner and purchased a half interest in the Democrat, which paper he now owns and is successfully subject is the father of four children, J.
