The Oranjemolen (Orange Mill) from before 1699 in Vlissingen, Netherlands
The Oranjemolen is a flour mill and former peel mill on the Oranjedijk in Vlissingen, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Because of its location, this mill is both a good wind catcher and an eye catcher. It was described in 1699 and must therefore have been built earlier. Since 1968 the mill has been owned by the municipality of Vlissingen. It is covered with roof leather and has a flight of / meters. The mill is operational since 2014 and is still used to grind grain on a voluntary basis. Of the 23 city mills in Vlissingen, the Orange Mill is the only one left. Of all the windmills in the Netherlands it is the one closest to the sea. Throughout history has been damaged several times because of war. A bullet from the English fleet in 1809 can still found on the southwest side of the mill wall. Traces of the Second World War can also be found - the Allies landed near the mill in 1944. In 2000 the Oranjedijk had to be increased by two meters. That is why the crooked mill (700 tons) has been set straight and jacked up two meters and in 2002 a major restoration took place.
