Middle bouts; cm (9-1/2 in.; Lower bouts: cm (17-1/2 in.), Chordophone-Lute-bowed-unfretted, Jean Baptiste Vuillaume (French, Mirecourt 1798–1875 Paris), Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (1798-1875) is considered to be the finest and most important luthier of the nineteenth century. He made over 3,000 instruments and carried out many experiments including a giant three-stringed 'Octobass' which stood over 11 feet high
