All these are sufficiently highto admit elephants with imiharies to pass through. The main gates are surmounted by Nowbut Khanas,where kettle drums, hautboys, trumpets, cymbols andother instruments produce an animating music, whichcan be heard from miles afar. Ordinarily the Nowbutplays once in the early morning, once at sunset andonce at midnight. But on Sundays and days of festi-vities, such as the Id, it plays every three hours, dayand night.
