Needlefish (family Belonidae) are associated with very shallow marine habitats or the surface of the open sea. Its narrow jaws are filled with sharp teeth. It is capable of making short jumps out of the water at up to 38 mph. Two historical deaths have been attributed to needlefish: 10-year-old Hawaian boy (1977) when night fishing at Hanamaulu Bay, Kaua'i, was killed when a 3-4 foot long needlefish jumped from the water and pierced his brain via eye socket and 16-year-old Vietnamese young man (2007) was stabbed through the heart by the six-inch spike of a needlefish when night diving for sea cucumbers near Halong Bay
