Although John Ellis (1755) published the first—and remarkably accurate—drawings of the "Figures of hollow Crosses" in the cortex of the scleraxonian Coralliiim rubrwn (Fig. 7), Valenciennes was the first to observe that these calcareous structures, which he called "sclerites," in the soft tissue of various gorgonians differed in shape from species to species.
