In July, 1804, the un-fortunate duel between AlexanderHamilton* and Aaron Burrf oc-curred : the latter, at the time,was Vice-President of the UnitedStates. This sad affair, which re-sulted in the death of Hamilton,grew out of a political quarrelbetween the two men. By itBurrs political influence was com-pletely destroyed; and when Jef-ferson was re-elected President fora second term, Geoi-ge Clinton,of New York, was chosen Burrssuccessor as Vice-President. IX. After his retirement from the vice-presidency. Burrmade a journey to the Southwest, and there his conduct sub-jected him to strange suspicion.
