Being patterns ordinarily sold, though, by reason of itsattempting to imitate round objects in nature, it cannever attain an art value, still it could be made a moreharmonious decoration than it is at present. The faultsof ordinary cretonne and chintz work are too great acontrast between background and design as to colours,and too lavish a use of brilliant flowers or birds in thepattern. The worker should bear in mind that the set-ting of one or two brilliant colours among several subduedones will produce a much better effect than the crowdingtogether of a number of equally bright shades.
