Grand Canal, Venice, with gondolas and docks in the foreground and the Rialto Bridge (centre left) in the background. Venice is a city of islands and canals in a lagoon in what is now north-eastern Italy. It was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and today is a popular tourist destination. The Grand Canal can be crossed by the Rialto Bridge. The first bridge here was built in 1181, but the current structure, which was built in stone, dates from 1591.
