PEOPLE QUEUING FOR PASSPORTS AT THE PETERBOROUGH OFFICE ON THURSDAY 12TH JUNE 2014. People were QUEUING out the doors at the passport office in Peterborough in Cambridgeshire today (Thurs) as the government announced emergency measures to help clear the back log of applications. Scores of Brits headed to the passport office to make sure they got their travel documents in time for their holidays - as up to 30,000 passports are said to have been hit by delays. Home Secretary Theresa May has said people renewing their UK passport from overseas will be given a 12 month extension to their existing passport. Those applying for passports overseas on behalf of their children will be given emergency travel documents. Mrs May, who was speaking in the Commons today (Thurs) said the government would do "everything it can" to deal with the backlog. Prime Minister David Cameron said hundreds of extra staff have been drafted in and new offices are being opened in Liverpool next week to help tackle the problem.
