NAVAL ACADEMYAT August 7th, 1815, George Bancroft, Secretary of the Navy uudeiPresident Polk, issned orders for theestablishment of a Naval School, midinstmeted Commander Franklin Bu-chanan (who subsequently commandedthe Confederate ironclad Merrimao,and was afterward taken prisoner byAdmiral Farragut in Mobile Harbor)to open a naval school in Fort Severn,Annapolis Harbor, Maryland. October 10th, 18-iS, the school waiformally opened, and the object of thoenterprise, with course of instruction,was set forth as follows: To collectthe midshipmen, who, from time totime, are on shore, and give themoccupation during their stay on land ■in the study of mathematics, nauticalastronomy, theory of morals, inter-national law, gunnery, the use ofsteam, the Spanish and Freneli lan-guages, and other branches essentialin the present day to the accomplish-ment of a naval officer.
