Ctilture.—A hardy annual plant, the seed pods of which, if picked when young and tender, make excellent pickles. Plant in May, in hills about three feet apart each way, and thin out to one plant in a hill; or if required for early use, it may be sown in a hot-bed, and afterwards trans- planted. One ounce will plant one hundred hills. Martynia Proboscidea. Per pkt. 5 cts.; oz. 30 cts. MELON==Cantaloupe Varieties. Culture.—Melons succeed best on a rich sandy soil, which has been enriched with well-rotted manure worked into the hills. When danger of frost is over, plant ten or twelve seeds in hills six feet apart and about an inch deep. To promote fruitfulness, pinch the end of the vines when they begin to blossom, especially if the growth is very luxuriant, and cultivate until the vines cover the ground. Be careful not to grow them near Cucumbers, Squashes, etc., as they readily hybridize, and the flavor of both be injured. One ounce of seed will plant sixty hills, two pounds will plant an acre. Wood's Perfection. We have never grown a melon that came nearer to our ideal of a perfect market and family melon, and the results of the past season more than fulfill our claims for it. In shape it is similar to the Bay View, but is more uniform and more thickly netted than that variety. It is well ribbed, thick fleshed, and an excellent shipper, and of splendid flavor. The flesh is of a beautiful deep rich green, turning to a sal- mon-tinted color, unusually sweei and luscious, making a most at- tractive and desirable table melon of the kind that is particularly sought after
