Discovery polar party. British explorers Ernest Henry Shackleton (left, 1874-1922), Robert Falcon Scott (centre, 1868-1912) and Edward Adrian Wilson (right, 1872-1912) in full sledging gear with sledging flags, preparing to depart on their Southern Journey on 2 November 1902. This attempt to reach as far towards the South Pole as possible was part of the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901 to 1904 (the Discovery Expedition). Led by Scott, the three set a new Farthest South record, reaching 82 degrees 17 minutes south. They turned back on 30 December and reached the ship on 3 February 1903. They had travelled 1540 kilometres in 93 days.
