Blue sky view to Berlin Wall Memorial and Border Wall 75, Commemorative Cross Sophien Cemetery rising grass, Bernauer Strasse

The Commemorative Cross of the Sophien Parish stands in the former 'death strip' of the Berlin Wall border defence at Bernauer Strasse, between Ackerstrasse and Bergstrasse. The information sign next to the cross reads: 'Approximately a thousand graves had to be moved when the border strip was developed. Its is, however, possible that the graves of World War 2 bomb victims were not exhumed and that the border grounds were built over the graves. This cross commemorates them.' When the Wall was built in 1961 part of it divided the cemetery of the Church of St Sophia (Sophienfriedhof). Part of the cemetery wall along Bernauer Strasse was incorporated into the border wall. Other parts of the wall were successively torn down and covered in sand to create open ground and a good field of fire in the 'death strip' behind the border wall facing West Berlin. Sunny afternoon view.
