The Hand of God reaches down into a painted frame to hold the scales of eternal justice. Fragment of late medieval fresco in the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady) at Bolzano / Bozen, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. Some frescoes in this cathedral show the strong influence of Florentine painter, Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337).

Bolzano / Bozen, South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: against a vivid turquoise background, the Hand of God reaches down into a painted frame to hold the scales of eternal justice, beside an angel with magnificent wings, in this small surviving fragment of a vibrant medieval fresco within the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady). Many wall paintings in the cathedral suffered from decades of 19th century neglect and damage from World War II Allied bombing, but still demonstrate the regional and local evolution of figurative art in the 14th and 15th centuries. While some early 14th century frescoes in the Duomo are in the Gothic linear tradition, later works show innovation in their composition and in the more natural way in which the artists depicted people. Some, such as this example, show the strong influence of Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337), the Florentine painter known simply as Giotto, and were probably painted by his pupils or followers. Fourteenth century works here include a Pope Urban V fresco cycle of c. 1370 by the Giotto-influenced Master of San Urbano, while a fresco of c. 1385, attributed to the Master of Seis or Siusi, depicts St Martin dividing his cloak with his sword to share it with a beggar. Fifteenth century artists represented include Konrad Erlin (Legend of the Seven Sleepers, 1424) and Friedrich Pacher (Legend of St Christopher, 1498). The cathedral, known to German-speaking Roman Catholics as Dompfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, stands on the site of an early Christian basilica. It was enlarged in Romanesque style before gaining a Gothic appearance between 1380 and 1420.
