Burnham Beeches, Buckinghamshire: remains of ancient woodland pasture where trees were periodically cut for fuel & winter fodder at 2-3m high.

Burnham Beeches: remains of ancient woodland pasture where trees were periodically cut for fuel and winter fodder at 2-3 metres high, allowing cows, pigs and goats to graze beneath. The average age of the surviving pollarded beeches is around 400 years. They are being managed again but must be cut at twice the original height or the trees will fail to regenerate.
