Being situated between the North andthe South gives this section an unusual advantage in disposition of her cabbage industry has built up an important business center at Rural Retreat,with good hotels, banks, mercantile houses, etc., which attracts much attentionin the wholesale vegetable I 1 s 235 The United States Fish Hatchery, three and a half miles west of Wytheville,is quite an important enterprise in the county, and is rapidly stocking the watersof the State with the best varieties of fish. Agriculture is carried to its highest perfection in this county in the departmentof grazing, and in this respect it is scarcely excelled in the State. Its cattle, sheepand horse products are immensely remunerative, much of the former being exportedand commanding the highest prices. Transportation facilities are excellent,furnished by the Norfolk and Western railroad passing through the heart of thecounty, and the Cripple Creek branch of the Norfolk and Western railroad extend-ing into the great mining region of the southeastern portion of the county; alsoa branch of the latter ten or twelve miles into a rich mineral section, developingthe celebrated Cripple Creek iron ores.
