Smooth muscle tissue, illustration. This muscle type is found in the walls of blood vessels, and the intestines and stomach. It is controlled by nerve impulses that regulate rhythmic involuntary contractions. Cell nuclei (dark) are within the individual smooth muscle cells (red). This muscle type is non-striated. It is also found in the bladder and in the reproductive systems and the respiratory systems. For a set of artworks showing the three muscle types, see images C023/8598 to C023/8600.
