Howling Wolf in a Deep Mountain Valley, 1912. Yoshimura Hōryū (Japanese, 1874–1950). Hanging scroll; ink and color on silk; overall: 188 x 61 cm (74 x 24 in.); painting only: x cm (46 3/4 x 16 1/2 in.). A wolf howls beneath the tall pines in a misty landscape. The painter was born in the bustling city of Osaka in the Kansai region. He studied with Mori Jih? (1818–1891) and admired the Maruyama school of painters. He was especially gifted at depicting deer, monkeys, tigers, weasels, and other animals.
