He then asked her the following question: Will you, MargaretPolley, recant the error which you maintain, be reconciled to the holychurch, and receive the remission of sins ? To which she replied, I cannot believe otherwise than I have spoken, because the prac-tice of the church of Rome is contrary not only to reason and mysenses, but also to the word of God. Immediately on this reply, the bishop pronounced sentence of con-demnation against her; after which she was carried back to prison,where she remained for upwards of a month. She was a woman in the prime of life, pious, charitable, humane,learned in the scriptures, and beloved by all who were acquaintedwith her. During her imprisonment she was repeatedly exhorted to recant;but she refused all offers of life on such terms, choosing glory, ho-nour, and immortality hereafter, rather than a few short years in thisvale of grief, and even those purchased at the expense of truth Dr. R.
