William Benjamin Carpenter (1813-1885), English physiologist. Carter was born at Exeter and was the son of a Unitarian preacher. He was apprenticed to
William Benjamin Carpenter (1813-1885), English physiologist. Carter was born at Exeter and was the son of a Unitarian preacher. He was apprenticed to an eye surgeon before studying medicine at london and Edinburgh. His medical research commenced with comparative neurology, leading to a fellowship of the Royal Society and the Fullerian Chair at the Royal institution. He conducted important work in marine zoology, but was also one of the founders of the theory of the adaptive unconscious in humans. In 1856 he became registrar of the University of London, a post he held for 23 years. He died in 1885 after an accident with a spirit lamp.
