Light micrograph of a section through the spinal cord, showing the variation in appearance between the outer white matter (consisting of a mass of nerve fibres) and an inner zone of grey matter (blue), where more densely-stained nerve cell bodies are apparent. The grey matter apppears in the shape of a butterfly if a whole cross-section of the cord is viewed. In the core of the grey matter is a canal (not visible) which conducts cerebro-spinal fluid and is continuous with the ventricles (chambers) of the brain. Magnification: x20 at 35mm size.
