A lack of snow in the Cascade Mountains and general drought conditions throughout the region are the cause for dramatic declines in water levels for many lakes and rivers in the Amermican Pacific Northwest. Shown here is Detroit lake, a large recreational reservoir east of Salem, Oregon. Normally the stumps of this old cedar forest would be underwater. Detroit Lake's water level is more than 100 feet lower than it uwsually is at this time of year.
