The Philip-Semroer Co. are showing a numberof new effects in gas and electric portables Theseare hand hammered brass, having a mosaic shade, andare made in various sizes. Their new piano lamp inthis design is a distinct novelty. Although the Tarentum Glass Co. did not exhibitat the Fort Pitt Hotel this year the volume of* businessthey have done is emeinently satisfactory and theyhave saved tbe expense. Their road men were busyseeing that no trade got away from them. 26. THE CONDITION OF BUSINESS. Business is very good taken as a whole,New York, though during the last part of last week some of the importers complainedthat they saw few visitors. The city is crowded withbuyers, and some of the big establishments have hadhard work to wait on the trade, as the buyers seemedto congregate in certain places, all at the same time,which perhaps accounts for the lack of them in otherplaces. All kinds of imported ware are in demand evenGerman fancy goods, which have been neglected solong. German dinnerware is very active, as are allthe staples. French goods have moved more freely during ihepast week than at any other time during the presentseason, and the importers are feeling very much en-couraged. English china, particularly the medium pricedware, is selling very well. Earthenware lines areholding their own with last year.
