If you’ve ever wondered where the mule deer gets it’s name, wonder no more. It’s the ears, man! I spotted this little group in the Smoke Creek Desert in Lassen County, California and they clearly spotted me as well. The area is absolutely one of my favorite local spots to spend some time in the spring when it gets beautifully green for a brief time. In addition to mule deer, the area is home to pronghorns, wild horses and burros, and a plethora of bird species, including golden eagles, several species of hawk, chucker, and sage grouse. It’s also the only place I’ve ever seen a badger in the wild (moving AWAY from me, thankfully).
