In fact it is more completely evergreen than any of our other oaks except the live oaks and Quercus niyrtifolia. A common shade-tree in the coastal plain, often attaining a diameter of three feet in cultivation. The wood would doubtless make good fuel, but I have never noticed any of it cut for that purpose. Grows usually in loamy sand, protected from fire, as in ham- mocks and on banks of streams. Mostly in the coastal plain. (See Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 35:52!), 1906.).
