Elder Becksteadhas labored assiduously in many dif-ferent branches of Church work, and isa constant and faithful Latter-daySaint. He has contributed a liberalshare toward the building up of thewestern country, having taken an ac- tive interest in all enterprises intendedfor public benefit. WARBURTON,Joseph, fourth Bish-op of the First Ward, Salt Lake City,is the son of James and Sarah War-burton, and was born Sept. 21, 1831, atRadcliffe, Lancashire, England. Inearly life he adopted the religion of theSwedenborgians, which enjoins total. abstenance from intoxicating drink,and strict vegetarianism. His religiousviews underwent a revolution in thesummer of 1847, when he attended acamp meeting of the Latter-day Saints,and for the first time heard the puregospel from the lips of an Elder. Fromthat time he was convinced of the di-vine character of Mormonism. Hewas, for a man of his active tempera-ment, somewhat slow to practicallycarry out his convictions in this matter,for although he continued to attend themeetings of the Saints twice a week,it was not till Oct. 26, 1851, that heidentified himself with the Church, be-ing admitted to baptism on that the spring of 1851, he was ordaineda Teacher, and labored faithfully inthat calling until Dec. 29th of the sameyear, when he was ordained an 1853, the Radcliffe branch was di-vided into two district
