By a decree of August 15,1875, the lawsof France, governing public instruction, wereapplied to Algeria. The principal points ofthis decree provide for the composition and. the functions of the Academic Council sittingat Algiers, and the creation and compositionof departmental councils. The Arabic collegeshave been suppressed, and their pupils dividedamong the French institutions. Mixed schoolshave been established. The Arabic languagehas been introduced in the examination for 20 ALGERIA. the baccalaureate, while the French languagehas been made a part of the course of instruc-tion in those schools in which young nativesprepare themselves for the public service. Up to 1874, the land granted to colonists bythe state was 565,000 hectares (1 hectare = ); the land ceded to the General AlgerianSociety and the Geneva Society, two coloniza-tion societies, was 130,000 hectares, and theland bought by Europeans from natives 260,-000 hectares, making in ail 955,000 hectares inthe hands of Europeans. During the years1876 and 1877, the Government intended tooffer 763 village lots and 111 isolated farms tocolonists. On December 31, 1875, there werethree lines
