Around this plaza is much open space, cavalry barracks and in-fantry barracks, with a colonnade along the front, under which yousee the soldiers sitting with their women folk, some of them nursingtheir children, others drinking mate, and all smoking cigars, both men. and women alike. At sunsetthe military band plays in aninformal way, and in the dis-tance the lights are seen burn-ing in the Church of San\ Francisco, on the edge ofthe cliffs, below whichyou see the primitivesemi - Indian huts ofthe Chacarita quarter,and below that the vast landscape of the winding river, and the darkwoodland solitudes of the Chaco. In the early morning the vast open spacein front of the market is thronged with donkeys, pack-mules, carts,teams of oxen, dogs, and peasants, who have come in from the countryto sell produce and buy provisions.
