French lavender (Lavandula dentata) leaf. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section of a French lavender leaf, showing the tooth-like structures (trichomes, small spikes) that give the plant its Latin name dentata, meaning toothed. A number of oil glands (small spheres) can also be seen. When the leaf is touched or damaged, the glands rupture and release the oil that gives lavender its distinctive fragrance. Magnification: x137 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
