Ford and Edison. Portrait of Henry Ford (1863- 1947) and Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), American inventors. Ford (left) and Edison were good friends, Ford having worked as the Chief Engineer for the Edison Lighting Company. Using his spare time, Ford built his first car in 1896. He set up his own company in 1903 and became one of the earliest most successful car manufacturers in America. Like Ford, Edison made his money through his inventions and hard work, founding a number of different companies. He filed 1180 patents cover- ing a range of technical fields. After meeting Ford in 1893, he performed over 9,000 experiments whilst trying to develop an electric car battery.
