Korean War, "Hope in Korea"

Caption: "Hope in Korea. Bob Hope was caught by the cameraman just as he was climbing out of the T-33 jet plane, which flew him from Taegu to Kimpo airfield in Korea, on his current entertainment tour. By the smile on the pilot's face, Hope has evidently made some witty remark about the ride." In the 1940s the USO was disbanded due partly to lack of funds. However, in 1950, when the United States entered the Korean War, Secretary of Defense George Marshall and Secretary of the Navy Francis P. Matthews requested that the USO be reactivated. Many stars, both well-known and new, came to perform. Bob Hope (May 29, 1903 - July 27, 2003), was an English-born American comedian, vaudevillian, actor, singer, dancer, author, and athlete who appeared on Broadway, in movies, television, and on the radio. He was noted for his numerous United Service Organizations (USO) shows entertaining American military personnel, he made 57 tours for the USO between 1941 and 1991. In 1997, the Congress declared him the "first and only honorary veteran of the armed forces." By the end of the war, over 113,000 American USO volunteers were working at 294 centers at home and abroad.
