AVe then sat down to enjoy a pipe, and watch the hinds, which had scampered off at the shot, and now stood grouped a couple of hun- dred yards off, wondering what had become of their lord and master; but, not wishing to injure them, I fired a shot over their backs, sending them scampering off to look for another stag,— Joe's opinion being that they would not be long before they had found one, as other stage, are always following the hinds at this season, and are only deterred from joining the herd by the presence of a bigger and stronger stag tiian themselves. We now proceeded to drag the old fellow out of the lake, which was, fortunately, a shallow one. His horns stuck up out of the water like a branch of a tree. After a good deal of trouble we got him ashore, and surveyed hia noble proportions.
