Endowed by naturewith a powerful physical organization, he was, inyouth, somewhat impatient of purely scholastic methods,which imposed too much in-door constraint upon amind linked to a body full of vigorous life, whichdemanded a lartre deo^ree of freedom and exercise inthe open air. But this very impatience of confinementthrew wide open to him the book of nature, laid thefoundation for an enthusiastic love of the natural. 83 sciences, and made him a keen and discriminatino-observer of material things; a kind of education welladapted to fit him for the great enterprises and thehigh and responsible trusts in which he has distin-guished himself.
