Thor pursues the Giants in this painting dating to 1872 by Swedish artist Winge. In Norse mythology, Thor was the god of thunder and thus the god of might and war. The son of Odin, he had a magical hammer named Mjollnir that returned to him, a belt of strength, and iron gloves. According to the myth, Thor made war against the giants. In one tale, he carved out three valleys in a mountain in a valley near Utgard when he threw his hammer at a giant named Shrymir (at right) who was really Utgard Loki in disguise and was using the mountain as a shield. Utgard-Loki was the king of the giants of the city of Utgard.
