Detail of the Caroline Thorpe Monument on Codden Hill With a Distant View of Barnstaple and the Taw Estuary.

This monument pillar is in memory of Caroline Thorpe, who was the wife of the local MP Jeremy Thorpe. She died in a car accident in 1970. The monument was designed by Clough Williams-Ellis. Codden Hill is one of a series of ‘whale-backed’ hills formed as a result of the incredible force of colliding tectonic plates. There are great views over Barnstaple, the River Taw and surrounding countryside from here.
