The archiepiscopal church made its patron, and in addition received new dona-tions and grants from Otto. The following bishopricswere made suffragans: Havelberg, Brandenburg,Merseburg, Zeitz, and Meissen. Then, on 20 April,967 the archbishopric was solemnly established at theSynod of Ravenna in the presence of the pope and theemperor. The first archbishop was Adelbert, a formermonk of St. Maximins at Trier, afterwards mission-ary bishop to the Russians, and Abbot of Weissenburgin Alsace. He was elected in the autumn of 968, re-. The Cathedral, MagdeburgNorth Side ceived the pallium at Rome, and at the end of theyear was solemnly enthroned in Magdeburg. The Diocese of Magdeburg itself was small; it coni-prised the Slavonic districts of Serimunt, Nudizi,Neletici, Nizizi, and half of Northern Thuringia,which Halberstadt resigned. Posen Was added tothe suffragan bishoprics later on (from 970 until thetwelfth century, when it fell to Gnesen), also Lebus,and, for a time, Kammin. The cathedral school espe-cially gained in importance under Adelberts efficientadministration. The scholasticus Othrich Was con-sidered the most learned man of his times. Manyeminent men were educated at Magdeburg. Othrichwas chosen archbishop after Adelberts death (981).Gisiler of Merseburg by bribery and fraud obtainedpossession of the See of Magdeburg, and also^ suc-ceeded temporarily in
