He enlisted in the RAF in 39 and was transported to South Africa to join 223 Squadron (an South/East African unit) which was utilised to fight the Italians from Abyssinia/Ethiopia. His journey took him north through the Sudan down the Nile into Egypt and then Western Desert where they supported the Eighth Army. From there to Sicily then Italy for that campaign. Travelled Sudan down the Nile into Egypt & Western Desert to join Eighth Army, Sicily & Italy. When it was clear that the war was nearly over volunteers were called for to become the army of occupation in Germany. Generous leave was offered prior to posting. At this point Jack had been abroad continuously for 4 years without home leave; he jumped at the chance by volunteering. During all of this journey Jack kept his camera with him. The family did not know about the photos until after his & his wife’s deaths and the album with his pencilled descriptions of the images where found in the bottom of a cupboard
