Number 17 at Burnpur

Burnpur Iron Works was located on India’s eastern coalfield and operated with iron ore taken from the vast deposits in the jungles of neighbouring Bihar. Typical British industrial locomotives existed throughout the Eastern Coalfield like this Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn 5’ 6” gauge 0-6-0T, built in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1948. The orange cloud in the background indicates that a charge of ore has gone into the furnace whilst the plumes of steam on the right indicated a coke quencher is active. A picture made in December 1976.
