Ranger 9 images of the Moon before impact on 24th March 1965. Ranger 9 was a space probe sent into space on the last of NASA's 'kamikaze' missions, which involved aiming probes at the Moon to take as many images as possible before crashing into it. Ranger 9 was the only mission to be equipped with the ability to convert its images into a form suitable for live broadcast on television screens. At 13:50 GMT, viewers watched a series of pictures showing the moon's landscape in detail for 15 minutes as Ranger 9 fell from a height of 2,363 kilometres into the crater Alphonsus. The series runs across from top left to bottom right, with the white circle marking the area of impact.
