X-ray (front view) of the chest of a 3 year old patient, showing a diaphragmatic hernia (at right) in which the stomach and intestine have been pushed up into the lung cavity causing lung collapse. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen, and has a vital role in breathing. It becomes weakened and can tear due to a hernia.
