The Mir-i-Arab Madrassa faces Poi Kalon on a foggy morning. Kalon Minaret rises in the background. Bukhara, Uzbekistan.

The square at Poi Kalon is one of Bukhara's most famous and historic. Facing it is the Mir-i-Arab Madrassa, a working institution of Islamic learning. Its construction began in 1535. Rising over the rear of the square, at over 48 meters, is the Kalon Minaret. Inscriptions date it to 1127. So impressed by the minaret's height and beauty, Genhis Khan is supposed to have spared it while he had the rest of the city destroyed. Bukhara, Uzbekistan.
