Evidence was thus obtained that the posterior lobe fur-nishes an internal secretion which has a specific effect upon theorgans of circulation and upon the kidneys. In addition, it hasbeen shown that these extracts cause dilatation of the pupils andstimulate the musculature of the bladder, uterus, and work by Herring* has made it very probable that thisinternal secretion is furnished by the epithelial cells of the parsintermedia. These cells apparently invade the pars nervosa,. Fig. 299.—Mesial sagittal section through developing pituitary body of a human fetus(fifth month;. The active material (pituitin)is formed or activated during the process of transformation in thenervous lobe and it has been possible to prove its presence in thecerebrospinal liquid, f There is some evidence also from histo-logical appearances that this secretion is augmented after completethyroidectomy, a fact which has Led to the view that there is afunctional relationship between this lobe of the pituitary body andthe thyroid tissue.
