The Manticore or mantichore from Edward Topsell's The History of Foure-Footed Beasts 1607. A creature with the body of a lion and head of man, which was said to bear such a wide grin, you could see three rows of razor-sharp teeth. Many of Topsell's creatures are copied faithfully from the earlier works of Gesner, Rondelet and Belon. However this was not, comin gin instead from medieval bestiaries.
